We’ve all been scanning through the fishing section at our local outdoorsman store and came across the aisle of fake/ plastic worms. Some fishermen are skeptical when it comes to using fake bait, while others use it all the time. Fake worms are widely used by freshwater fishermen, but what about saltwater fishermen?

Plastic worms can be used when saltwater fishing, but they might not bring the greatest results. If fishing inshore, a fake worm might bring you slightly more results than fishing offshore, but overall fake worms just aren’t the best option for saltwater. When going deep sea fishing, the species of fish that live that far out just won’t normally go for a worm. Fish want to eat what they are used to and what they know tastes good. If you are fishing off of a pier and wanting to go for some flounder or something along those lines, you will have much more luck. Still probably not the greatest choice, but it’s still worth a shot. Perhaps you want to give plastic worms a try anyways. If you stay inshore, you might have some luck catching trout and flounder. Although plastic worms aren’t the best for saltwater, they do work very well when using them in a delta. A delta is where freshwater and saltwater collide. You can expect to catch trout and flounder also when using fake worms in a delta.
Best worms for saltwater fishing
Now that you’ve learned about plastic worms, you might be wondering what worms you can use in saltwater.

Cinderworms and bloodworms are two of the best worms to use when saltwater fishing. These worms are not your average earthworm. Cinder worms and bloodworms are actually sea worms. That means that they actually hatch and live in the sea. Saltwater fish are much more likely to go for bait they already know and love. Cinderworms and bloodworms are among these. Fishing with these two types of worms will greatly increase your catch. Another great thing about these sea worms is that actually have hatching seasons. If you’re lucky enough to get to fish in the middle of a sea worm hatch, you’re chances of catching fish are going to go through the roof. When the worms are hatching, the fish are chowing down. Learning what worms are local to the area you are fishing at, and when the worm hatches happen will be very beneficial to you on your next saltwater fishing trip! Does fake bait work in saltwater?
We’ve covered using fake worms as bait in saltwater, but what about fake bait in general for saltwater fishing?

Fake bait works great for freshwater and saltwater alike. One specific type of bait that is sure to reel you in a big one is the fluke. The soft, plastic paddle tails also work great for catching saltwater fish. If you know anything about saltwater fishing, you probably know the main thing saltwater fish love to eat—shrimp! You can catch almost any saltwater fish with a shrimp…so why not try a fake one. One of the best plastic shrimps to use is the Power Prawn. You won’t find many saltwater fish that will resist a tasty shrimp…or at least what they think is a tasty shrimp. There are tons of different types of fake bait that can be used on your next saltwater excursion. Just do some research on the fish that you are trying to catch and go off of that. When in doubt go for the fake shrimp!

This is not the only reason fish eat shrimp. They also just love how shrimp taste. I mean can you blame them? If I had the opportunity to eat shrimp as my main food source, I wouldn’t be sad about it. From snapper to sharks, pretty much anything that lives in the ocean eats shrimp. Squid is also a great choice, but shrimp will by far catch you the most fish when it comes to saltwater fishing. Some fishermen say that squid will catch smaller fish than shrimp would. This isn’t scientifically proven or anything, but maybe these fishermen are on to something. Overall, go for shrimp if you’re wanting to use the best bait possible for saltwater fishing.
